This photograph was taken in 1971 for the Echo and Post regional newspaper [Herts, Beds, Bucks] about a year after the old Chapel was bought by Chorleywood Community Arts Centre Charity.
The archway that is clearly visible in this black and white image, is virtually covered now by the mezzanine floor that was installed to create a pottery studio upstairs., although the two lower portions of the arch with the decorative plaster roundels painted in red and gold today are still visible (see below).
Does anyone recognise these faces of some of the original founding members of the charity? They’re having a well earned cup of tea in between building work and decorating the centre, apparently all done on a voluntary basis.

130 years of history COMPETITION
The brief was to create an imaginative piece of artwork celebrating our building’s 130 year birthday.
The competition was open to CCAC Members only. Closing date was June 15th 2023.
Ceramics, paintings, drawings, prints, textiles, photography, all media encouraged. Independently judged, the best twenty entries were displayed in the summer, with the top three having pride of place.
The winner was Mockie Harrison and received FREE CCAC Membership for a year.
The brief: “Maybe one of the newspaper stories below, published during the hot and thundery August of 1893, fires your imagination? Maybe you just love some of the remaining original architectural features of the building? Possibly you want to combine them or create something completely different that captures its age? Whatever gets the creative juices flowing, enjoy yourselves and we look forward to seeing your creations!”
